What are Chemical Peels?
To provide the highest quality results from chemical peel facial treatments, Ben Schultz, M.D., ABPS Certified, in Baltimore, MD, provides you with several options. Your personalized chemical peel with exfoliating solutions (such as glycolic, salicylic, trichloroacetic, and lactic acids) will reveal smoother, healthier skin. At our innovative facility, our team offers chemical peel treatments that help to remove skin abnormalities like wrinkles, scars, fine lines, uneven patches, hyperpigmentation problems, and more. Chemical peels eliminate dead, damaged skin cells by using a customized treatment on your skin that causes the visible layer to peel off. When your skin heals and begins to repair and rejuvenate itself, you should notice a smoother, clearer complexion. A chemical peel facial is a nonsurgical method to make your complexion luminous and may be appropriate for the face, neck, and décollatage.
Deep Chemical Peels
In our Baltimore, MD office, we offer deep chemical peels. Deep peels are the strongest type of chemical peels and it does require the lengthiest recovery time. This is an aggressive procedure that can leave your face swollen, peeling, and itchy for 2 – 3 weeks. Patients who get a deep peel typically have age or dark spots, sun damage, significant acne scars, or deep scars. Since this type of peel is typically uncomfortable for patients, your aesthetician may provide you with an anesthetic before your procedure.

How is a chemical Peel performed?
During your appointment, we will have you lying down in a relaxed position to administer your peel. A team member will make sure your skin is cleansed before applying the customized solution to the face and/or neck. We will massage the solution onto your face and allow it to work for an appropriate amount of time that will be determined in your treatment planning session. Next, we will clean the solution off your skin and apply a neutralizing agent. You are encouraged to bring sunscreen or a hat to wear outside after the treatment to protect from environmental exposure.
Chemical Peel FAQ
What level should I choose for my chemical peel?
Which level of chemical peel is best for you will vary based on your unique skin needs and aesthetic goals. During your consultation with Dr. Schultz, He will help you decide which formula is right for your skin. Some factors you may want to consider are your general health, the type of skin you have, how deep you want the peel to work, how long you can spend in recovery, and what concerns you have about the appearance of your skin. For first-time patients, it is better to try a lighter chemical peel and decide what you think of the results. From there, you and Dr. Schultz can adjust your treatment plan to find the best chemical peel level for your skin.
Should I get a chemical peel or dermabrasion treatment?
Chemical peels and dermabrasion are both facial treatments that address surface blemishes to give your skin a smoother appearance. The major difference is that dermabrasion requires surgical tools (a rotating brush or shaving instrument) to remove the top layer of skin with a careful scraping process. A chemical peel uses a caustic solution that is applied to your skin to dissolve damaged skin cells. In your initial consultation, Dr. Schultz will go over the pros and cons of each treatment and help you choose whether a chemical peel or dermabrasion is best for your needs and goals.
Will my face hurt after a chemical peel?
Depending on the formula used, you may have mild discomfort while it is actively treating your skin. If you choose a lighter peel, you will probably notice some stinging; however, it goes away quickly with the use of a handheld fan. Deep or medium peels are better for deeper skin damage and offer results that last a long time; however, they can cause greater discomfort. Numbing cream, medications, and soothing ointments can be used to minimize your discomfort during the treatment. Dr. Schultz or a member of His team will talk to you about how to care for your skin after a peel to maintain your results.
